The impact of our business goes well beyond the consumers and prescribers of our products. Employees, shareholders, suppliers, contractors, and the communities in which we operate are affected by our economic performance.

Economic responsibility

Research and development

Globally, Bristol-Myers Squibb invests more than US$3.5 billion annually on research and development. Currently, we are implementing a new strategy for building our company. We are concentrating on disease areas where the need is great for better treatments and where we either already have strong positions – in cancer, HIV/AIDS/ psychiatric disorders, atherosclerosis/thrombosis and diabetes – or can build future strengths based on our promising pipeline opportunities. These emerging areas include Alzheimer's disease, hepatitis, obesity, rheumatoid arthritis, and solid organ transplantation.

Philanthropic support

From the terrorist attack in Bali to the tsunami-ravaged region of Asia to the Victorian bushfires in 2009, the company has supported programs to provide immediate relief to the victims of disasters. Our efforts are channeled to where they are needed most, either at a local level or through partnerships with six international relief organisations.

Globally, Bristol-Myers Squibb makes significant charitable donations of products and cash each year.

Creating employment

Our research, manufacturing, distribution, sales, and other operations globally create tens-of-thousands of jobs for suppliers, contractors, researchers and ancillary services.

Bristol-Myers Squibb directly employs 30,000 people around the world, with more than 200 people employed in Australia.

Bristol-Myers Squibb strives to provide jobs and equal opportunities regardless of gender, religion, race, age or ethnicity. We provide safe working conditions, pay fair wages, and strongly support ethical work practices, including provisions against child and forced labour.
